The meaning of 11:36–45 is disputed. Critical scholars hold that it elaborates further on Antiochus IV, though the prophecy fails, showing that the author has gone from history in the guise of prophecy to genuine prediction, which, as it turns out, he is not very good at. Conservative and traditional scholars usually hold that this passage speaks of an eschatological antichrist figure, so the prophecy is yet to be fulfilled.
